Three signs from the upper end of St John St.

This first one isn't painted on the bricks.

Rusden's London House and a picture of the business. Not a small establishment.

These ones I have seen photos of elsewhere, but hadn't seen the actual things. Obviously I must walk along St John in the wrong direction.

John McKenzie & Co Pty Ltd

Apple Isle Sparking Cyder, by "Modern Signs" (bottom right corner).

Van Diemen something, a "Product of Tasmania" (bottom left corner)

Mercury Cider "First for Thirst"

Img_5928

The last one for today is on the edge of the Elizabeth St car park, on the back of (as well as I can work out) a building behind 145-147 St John St.

"Buy Super Pies & Pasties" by "Scott Signs". 91 is an Evandle/Longford area phone number. (My mother says Super Pies & Pasties have been around "for thousands of years".)

Seems to be an older one behind it too.

I love these. I especially love the range of dates (that last one is from my lifetime, for certain) and how consistently Taswegians have drunk cider across the years :).

I did try to get narrow down the date ranges on the painted ads but with no luck. Although I found both Modern Signs & Scott Signs were about in the 1950s, and Mercury Cider first appeared in 1916 :)

What I love about them, is now I'm looking for them, I see them all over the place where I didn't before. Some times I think I see them where they're not. Ghost signs :)
