At Triabunna, which is otherwise a fairly ordinary looking coastal town, I came across these, which puzzled me. Two identical buildings at 90o to each others. Not houses then. So what are they?

I know because I went across the road and read the information panel there :)

I can only speak for western Virginia, but this area has late 18th-mid 19th century outbuildings...servants' quarters, barns, places for tools, etc....that are built like this and often face each other this way. The why of their positioning, though, I'm not certain about.

Like a farm yard sort of set-up? I've seen that on older farmsteads (obviously) which is probably why my first thought was "barns" followed by "Two of them? In a town?"

Now you've got me thinking, I have seen that layout elsewhere and I suspect it will be coming up in photos in the next week.
