The flat bed wagon in the bottom photo looks like a delivery cart. I've seen them restored (and reproduced) and they usually have a basic wooden seat up at the front - one plank for back support, one plank for bum support. The one I remember was connected to the wagon by thick metal cable, though a wooden stand would also work as well. They were the sorts of wagons that would haul things like wool bales, and possibly kegs lashed tight to it, though from memory a brewery wagon would have a lip around it. You've piqued my curiosity now - I'll have to go see what I can find out!
This does make sense (esp. after Meg's comment about the heavy structure). Wool bales would makes sense too. I'll keep an eye out for similar pictures.
