I appear to be done. Huh. Where are the fireworks? The confetti?

All right, I still need to tweak the dialogue, proof read multiple times, find a name for the country and generaly tidying up stuff. Fiddling, as I call it. But I'll never be done doing that. I always go back and fiddle with things :)

Final lines:

"Wait," Jenn said. He went to sit up, then thought better of it. "You want me to give these directly to the High Lord of Arthenia, the second most important man in the whole country? They'll probably shoot me for approaching too near the house."

"It shouldn't be a problem," Gwyn said, then the little bastard grinned. "Not for you."

So now how do I find someone to read the previous 84,700 words?

[livejournal.com profile] halspacejock posted a Nanowrimo reminder. That's National Novel Writing Month, where you're supposed to write a 50,000 word novel (or part thereof) in a month.

I've found 50K is a good size for a first draft & it's bloody good for generating momentum, so I've done it a few times now.

And last year I said, "No more!".

Last year was a hard one. After bugging me for months (and giving me a complete blow-by-blow account of what happens), the main character dug in his heels and refused to cooperate*. So I decided to take it easy and only do the 2000 words a day needed to complete the things by the end of the month. Then at the end of the first week, it got easier (I'd been referring to the MC by his first name, turns out he preferred me to use his surname) and I thought I could pick this up a bit and maybe finish in 15 days (my best time so far). Except I was going to Hobart later that week, so I'd have to get finish before then. At this stage, I'd only written 26K, just over half so I had to sit down and write the rest in 43 days. Which was... fun. I noticed I did 9000 one day. Exactly 9000, and not a word over ;)

Therein is the problem though. If I do it again, I feel I have to do as good, or better, than the previous year. (No. No. NO.) I'm also writing first drafts faster than I can rewrite/finish them. I don't want to do it again.

But I keep getting good, usable ideas :(

And it is a good motivator.

*It's an interesting novel though. I have my two about the sentient pirate ship, and a frigate turns up at a couple of points. I got to wondering about the disadvantages of a sentient frigate. They can't be separated from their captain, or they start to die, so no promotion for him. They don't react very well to being damaged, which makes them a bit useless in a combat situation. Also, is it possible for someone to control the ship through the captain (e.g. by torturing them)?

It ended up being a parallel novel to Windweaver, in that it takes place at the same time and the start & end are the same (same scene, different POV), as well as part of the middle. Which means it can't be sold/puiblished unless WW is, which is a bit frustrating.

"And I think I know how to make him show his hand."

That's good. Now would you care to share with me, seeing I'm the one who is going to be writing it?

So Agent Kyle has thought of something that he can do or say that will give away the midnight rider's identity. What would that be?

I'm still working on Fox obviously. It was a close thing. This morning I pulled out the first draft of Falcon, which was my Nanonovel from last year. The one I spent 10 days fighting to get words for and then wrote the remaining 27,000 words in *mumble*3*mumble* days. I read the first few paragraphs, and liked what I read. The writing sucked. It is put together with words scraped off the bottom of the writing pond. I knew it sucked. But the ideas, the characters, the situation, I like it. I kept reading. I read the whole bloody draft.

The main character in this, I have spent months trying to get him to shut up so I could concentrate on what I wanted to work on. I finally managed this about 10 days ago and what do I do? The one thing guaranteed to "get his attention" again. I do wish it was possible to hire the ingrates out to other writers.

So I'm letting the characters in WTSBIP (Work That Should Be In Progress) have their heads for now, to encourage them to do something interesting. Coming up with plans that I don't know about wasn't really what I had in mind though.

Had to find a new desktop image.

Not sure why, but once I'd done that, I could settle down and write.

Weird is... writing with a POV/main character who until now has always been referred to by his surname or title.
