xenith: (Update)
I redid my word count chart and graph to be more useful i.e. to show where I am (blue) in relation to where I should be (white). I thought I was getting behind but it seems I'm still ahead.

xenith: (Hijacking: low)
I have pretty world count graph! This makes up for suck, flat story :)

(You can see where I started #2 :)
xenith: (Nanowrimo: Tea)
Done, at 151,000 words.

And I am never, ever going to do anything like that again. Remind me next year, OK?

This my daily word count graph.
(The white line is the daily average.)

You can see where I wrote the first one in 5 days (and wake up Friday and thought "Oh, I have to write 13,000 words today").

You can see where I took it easy for a week on the second one, and where I realised if I ramped it up a bit I could make 150K, and where it became a slog just before the end, but the final day was easier.

You see where I "started" number three :(

And you can see where I wrote 10K again today, just because I could. :)

And my red World Count Graph because it's pretty.

I learnt a LOT from doing this, but that will have to wait because now I have to go to bed.

Update

I need some encouragement. See - plateau! :(

Monday I was supposed to start 3rd book/long story thingy. And I did have this sort of thing with three characters, and the first few scenes and the main conflict that I thought would be enough to get me through another 30K (although it was historical (eep) fantasy with a werewolf (eep)). So I start writing and I have about 200 words of it done, but then I have this odd little conversation on IRC that set off a really vague but interesting idea. I watched TV for a bit. Then grumbled about word counts on Twitter to a friend, and she made a fairly benign comment. But that comment met up with the vague idea and, well, my 200 words already written looked suddenly very dull so I deleted it and started this other thing.

Minor problem there in that I only had enough of an idea to get me through the first 2000 words, and it's set in Melbourne 1880. Sort of. Which of course I know nothing about.

But hey, I wrote 5000 words on it today (for a total of 125,000). It's just taking the idea of "making it up as I go" to a level. I can handle that.

Although what would really help is a list of events in SE Australia in 1879 so I can give my something to do while they're saving the world as we know it. Otherwise, they might end up sitting at home watching the fire the whole time.

There are two problems with starting a new writing project.

1. Coming up with new characters, plot ideas, setting etc.

2. GETTING THE OLD ONES OUT OF YOUR HEAD

I also seem to have the line "No, no, don't hurt the elephant." stuck in my head. Which probably sounds funny, but in context, it's sad :(

I have pretty world count graph!

92,456 or something like that.

Now I go to bed and not think about tomorrow.

Update

Nov. 9th, 2010 10:47 pm
xenith: (Hijacking: low)
OK last two days

Day 8: 2398
Day 9: 2261

Total on this WIP: 9193
Total all up: 59262

That last number is so frustrating. I could get to sixty thousand tonight if I-- no, no, no, not going there.

I realised today, with the slower speed, I have more time to spend thinking about what I'm writing. Whether this is beneficial remains to be seen :) Also, considering 2200 words a day to be slow is a little weird.

On the negative side, tomorrow I run out of story unless 1) books on hold at library turn up earlier than expected 2) I find something useful on line

Day 7

Nov. 7th, 2010 07:34 pm
xenith: (Update)
I'll keep updating because it keeps me honest, and I think my World Count graph looks funny :)

I'm only allowed to write 2200 words a day:

Day 6: 2259
Day 7: 2392

I was on 2000 and they started another Word War so I ended up writing a bit more. That is allowed though.

Total: 54720

xenith: (Hijacking: low)
Last one - so I'll put in my little chart too. Because I can :)

After first world count update of the day... it isn't really curving.

(White is where I should be, blue is where I am and black is where I want to be)

Day 3

Nov. 3rd, 2010 11:43 pm
xenith: (What did I just write?)
My "best time" for Nanowrimo was back in 2007. I had an exam in the middle of the month so I wanted to get done by then. So I did it in 9 days, with a daily average of 5558 (obviously). That required some days over 6000 and even one over 7000, which took me all day. It's not the typing speed that limits me, but the key hits. Ouchies. Much ouchies. And having enough story in my head that I can find that many words in a day. So, yeah, 7300 was obviously my limit, and I had no intention of doing more than that.

I say this, so you'll understand why I looked a little startled every time I update my word count now.

Day 1

Nov. 1st, 2010 09:46 pm
xenith: (Nanowrimo: Don't ask)
I managed 10,000 words today. Not sure what happened there.

But I'm going to bed early because I am wroted out and I have some hope of getting up early to get some more done before I have to go out.

And yes, I am using last year's icons. I don't like this year's.

My World Count Graph!

xenith: (Hijacking: low)
Last graph :)

I added a line for 50K (white was target word count, blue was actual).

Day 8

Nov. 8th, 2009 10:42 pm
xenith: (Nanowrimo)
I haven't posted my graph lately!

34110 so far.

Had a bad patch today (heading rapidly towards the area of "Delete everything") but I was informed quite definitely that leaving a character just about to be shot was Not Good and I should go back and fix the situation now. Any protests by me that he was fictional, so it didn't well bloody matter were ignored. And then they brought in another 3 characters, one of whom is muttering that she wants to be a regular.

Meanwhile, in my until now well-behave story, the MC has gone off to live in another town entirely. Eh?

Day 5

Nov. 5th, 2009 10:14 pm
xenith: (Hijacking: Severe)
Added 5000 words for a total of 21,400.

I would be happier if my "serious" novel wasn't heaving towards the end game on just 14,000 words. Oops.

xenith: (Nanowrimo: Total Silence)
I have two problems

Problem 1:

How would you try to prove someone is not a ghost?

Problem 2:

"After dark, we should go and visit Jimmy."
I must have looked surprised, because he grinned. "We have to tell Jimmy how we're going to help him escape."
"Jack, we don't know."
He shrugged. "We'll know by then."

I'll have to know too. Um. Help? (He's in chain, in a cell. In them morning he'll be taken on board a ship to the town for trial.) They need a plan tonight that they'll carry out the next day.

Day 3

Nov. 3rd, 2009 11:53 pm
xenith: (Nanowrimo: Tea)
5100 for the day, for a total of 12166, which is better than my Day 3 total for 2007.

I have decided trying to beat my totals for 2007 is silly, as Day 4 means 6400 words. Not going to happen.

I will stick to 4000 a day, I think.
