Go and read this article. If any of that is new to you or you feel a need to go check your work for such "mistakes", then do everyone a favour, stop with the publishing stuff and learn to write. That is basic writing craft. Beginner stuff. You should be able to write 200 words on the strengths and weakness of each point before you even start to think about publishing (or submitting) your writing.

Seriously.

How can anyone write a whole novel without learning that stuff?

Because, as the author says, these days anyone can self-publish - without even going to a vanity press! It's impressive, Monissa. I have no intention of ever self-publishing, but its all good advice that can equally be used to get past the slush pile. :-) Mind you, there's a lot of garbage out there that ISN'T self-published and you have to wonder how that got past the slush pile - and, in many cases, the author got an agent!
