Last Leg - Lake Leake
May. 2nd, 2010 03:57 pmThe "Lake Leake Highway" is the alternative (shorter, easier, incredibly less interesting) way to get from the East Coast to the middle of the state. It's not actually a highway, it just gets called that.

This is apparently a lookout. Also, I think those road signs are a bit optimistic.

If you have a step ladder, it might work.
It is a nice view, just a shame the trees are in the way.

The road runs through state forest reserves and Forest Tas reserves and whatever else there is. There are signs up at some points saying you're entering or leaving one, but what's on one side of the road isn't the same as the other.
However it works out, there's a lot of trees.

Tourist Information Centre: there's a couple of walks that leave from this point that we might do another day.

More trees.

Aha. We found it.

The road into the lake isn't sealed.

Lake Leake was created last century sometimes. It's involved in the water supply to Ross and Campbell Town, which despite all the trees, aren't far from here, about 30 km. I also think it's point of origin of the Elizabeth River, which flows through Campbell Town, more regularly than what it did before the lake was created.

That looks like the dam.

Lake Leake Chalet Hotel.

We had some discussion about whether to go in here to have a drink. The probably was solved by it being closed.

Heading out again. Can you see something there on the side of the road?

I'm thinking pademelon. Definitely a small macropod.

Back on the main road. You can tell, because it's sealed.
I have this thought that as we're approaching the Midlands, which isn't exactly overly forested, the trees should give way to paddocks soon.

They're sneaky though. You get to an open area

and then... more trees!!

But wait, what's this...

Yes, it's the green rolling hills of the Midlands!
The road comes out at Campbell Town, where we get an ice cream, and from there, it's just half hour to home.
