One question answered...

xenithFurther to the bit about the House in the photo from a couple of days ago.
A bit of a google and a email fired off to a distant cousin (remember me, we exchanged emails a couple of years ago) and it seems the house was built by one Thomas Johnson, who, we probably don't recall, was the father of Charles's wife. So that explains the family connection to the house. But, now we have a cooper and possible ship owner who purchased xxxx acres of land and built a "20 room mansion" and his daughter married a shepherd whose passage out was paid by the government. Seems a bit odd. Needs further investigation, indeed.
In other news, mum came by (with the two kids) and left me with some interesting presents (rather interesting book about taking photos of people; a shirt, at least it's shades of red though; a looooong handed pruners and a National Geo video discussing the connections between LOTR movies & real events), then we went up to sisters and had tacos for tea. B-in-l rather cheerfully tells me I'll be 40 in just 5 more years. Although he's 11 months older than me, so I guess he's feeling old ;)
