Tongs for coal or briquettes? I know a rello had ones jsut like that, but that doesn't mean she wasn't misusing tongs used for something else entirely. She had that tendency, you see.

I can see that, and they're the right balance of ornate/utilitarian too. Although I think the mechanism (which of course you can't see properly in the photo, it has a thin strip of metal that makes them springy (like secateurs)). I'll give coal tongs a try next Monday though.

That's possible. The "cutting" edge (it's not sharp now, but..) is a bit small but definitely worth chasing up.
