A while back, I was going to post some of the pictures of the outside of gold mine museum at Beaconsfield, so I looked in my books to get the relevant dates to add to the post, and ended up notes for a longer post. Unfortunately, when I went back recently to write it up properly, I couldn't make sense of it :) I'll get back to it, but in the meantime, here's an easier post!

The Grubb Shaft Gold & Heritage Museum is located in the ruins of the old gold mine.

Beaconsfield - mines

Across the road from these are a relocated schoolhouse (from Flowery Gully, built in the 1890s), a small shop and a miner's cottage. All set up so visitors can look in the windows.

I cleverly forgot to get a photo of the front of the cottage.

I don't know the background behind this, whether it was relocated or reproduced, or how authentic it is. Most extant cottages around Beaconsfield are bigger, but this one is not unlike the vertical board cottages in more remote mining towns (not that I can find any pictures of such). Although the three windows in a row is odd, added I assume for extra visibility.

The state Archives does have a number of photos (175) of Beaconsfield c. 1890 so you can judge for yourself.

At the front, there is one long room, with a sitting area on the left and a sleeping area on the right.

At the back, there's a dining room (on the right) and a bathroom.

I'm fairly sure the general store was relocated from somewhere else, but I can't remember. This is looking in the front window (the one you can see in the previous photo) with the counter on the right. As for the contents, I assume it's been furnished with whatever was available & for appearance, rather than any real attempt of historical accuracy.
