Brainstorming

I'm sure my characters get together and come up with these things just to annoy me.

Goverment-issued hand-gun, x centuries time. What would it be like? What would it fire? Not one of those sily laser/phaser things.

So we have a large mine, spaceport & city. A road leads from here out through all the smaller towns. A few days journey along this road, is the house where the family who own/manage said mine live. Twice a week, a "mail coach" makes this trip carrying, I thought, money between the house and city. But, as little cash actually changes hands out that way, there's no for it to be regularly carried. So, what would be regularly carried by the mail coach, that would be worth stealing?

EDIT: The reason I mentioned the spaceport, goods are either shipping in from off planet twice a year, or produced on farms. So something/s that would be sold in the city or produced near the city.

If you wanted a slightly more sophisticated weapon there is always the genetically keyed smartgun with the variable ammunition load. See Judge Dredd, Logan's Run, that sort of thing.

Then there is the bioweapon organism/partner like Earth the Final Conflict.

A different take on that is an AI/weapon such as Ken MacLeod wrote about - was it The Star Fraction?

Stealable important stuff - drugs, entertainment? A person?
