This is bugging me. A commonly protrayed man's costume -- loose white shirt and..... what's the rest?

by "loose white shirt" are you talking about what they call a "poet's shirt"?

That's it!

Any other time I'm looking at costume pages, that is all I can find. When I want it... not one to be seen.

Now I have the words, I can find lots again! Thank you!

As a guy, I'd say it first depends on era, doublet and hose as suggested above, would fit in some periods, but not contemporary.

For myself, I like white oxford shirt (button down collar, 100% cotton material if I'm using an americanism), blue jeans and black boots.

If I'm doing something where jeans aren't appropriate, I'll go with Dockers.

is this any help?

Not for this case, but I'm keeping it for another time. (I thought Dockers were shoes for some reason.)

I thought they were a football team in purple, so you're one up on me.
