Distracted
Apr. 14th, 2005 07:39 pmI just wrote a 1280 word ng post about writing. Does that count as 1000 words for the day?
The last couple of days I've been looking through old, never finished stuff in my Writing folder. Well, that's where I started. A lot of it is from the "one new start a day for a week" dares I did a while ago. Weird in a way. There's these bits of stories, with people in them doing things that obviously have something intersting story behind/before them, but they don't exist beyond the words in front of me.
Last night though, I found the folder of stuff copied over from the other computer, which also include the stuff copied over to that computer from the 286 and stuff typed into the 286 from the C64.
My official writing history is I started writing seriously in 1996, had a block for about 4 years, because I was convinced I couldn't edit, until I accidently finished a short-short. In this version, a story by the title of "Out Of Time" becomes the first complete story I wrote and the stupid novel (the one that might be out somewhere) was the first novel.
Like any official history, this overlooks a few things. The most obvious being the novel I wrote in the mid-90s (and submitted to Critters) and the short story I was trying to write when I had the idea for the other one, that was also subbed to Critters. Both of them are why I'm glad the Critter archives don't go back to the start :) And there's the roughed out novel about the reluctant hero and the giant lizard alien invaders.
It also overlooks everything I wrote prior to 1996. Everything that was copied over from the other computer. Including an interesting couple of scenes about a guy who dons! a cloak/tunic type costume to inspire the locals to rebel against the authority figures. The characters in that were/are fascinating. How could I have forgotten them? The storyline needs a good kicking and it obviously predates mobile phones as a fashion accessory but the characters would be fun to work with. The basic storyline is quite workable too. Hmmm.
That's the interesting thing about history of any sort. It keeps changing.
