Via [livejournal.com profile] girliejones where there's been a bit of discussion on 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die. Although its not a very inspiring list, for the most part.

So, I need my own list!

But it should really be made up of books I haven't read yet, or what's the point.

Therefore it requires input from people. Other people. You (esp you who don't comment very often).

What books would you put on a 'must read' list? They might be recent or classics. Fiction or non-fiction. Deep and meaningful or simply fun.

OK added. I shall have to put my little list somewhere now. Hopefully it will grow then

I always think those "do this before you die!" lists sound awfully morbid. Don't read that last book!

Reminds me of the Native American tradition that if a woman finishes all of her sewing projects, the world will end. :)

My contributions/suggestions would be:

Tam Lin - Pamela Dean
The Forsyte Saga - John Galsworthy
Wuthering Heights - Emily Bronte
Heroides - Ovid
Goblin Market - Christina Rosetti (not technically a book on its own except when it is)
Absolute Nobody - Lee Tulloch
Magic for Beginners - Kelly Link
Serena and the Sea Serpent - Garth Nix (I'm sorry, but it's still his best work!]
A Christmas Carol - Charles Dickens [his only readable work!]
The Three Musketeers - Alexandre Dumas

Well, it's a start. :)

Ooh, thanks! I've even read two of them (that is a start).

I've seen "The Forsyte Saga"around a bit lately. Was wondering if it was worth reading.

i'm definitely going to read it.

If i got my act together, I'd organise readalongs whjere we all aim to read the book by a certain date and can discuss it - or i think they call that a bookclub - but then, i can't promise I won't start 18 other books.

The books are brilliant - very witty prose.
