That novel thing

Don't want to say too much here because I'll be wanting to con people into reading this for me at some point and I'd prefer them not to have an preconceived ideas about what is happening. Of course, I don't think anyone reading this is likely to be a beta reader so it probably doesn't matter. If anyone reading this does think they they might want to read the thing for me, look away now!
The Wind Weaver is a sentient sailing ship, one of the special ships that can be woken up and are then able to respond to their environment, making them faster and more efficient to operate than a dead or sleeping (able to be woken) ship. The downside is, they need to stay in physical contact with a human (the bond-holder) or a close blood relative, or they start to fade (lose sentience) and die.
The Weaver, with her captain, Grace, has spent the last twenty years chasing down merchant ships, slaughtering their crew & taking their cargo, and maybe a prisoner for the captain's pleasure. The setting is a little more modern than that usually associated with pirates though. And her crew includes a power-hungry, greed-driven stayr who is first mate; the part-human part-elf second mate (should I mention that elfs like to eat humans & are sadistic?) and a healer whose grandmother was a dragon.
No plot given away there :)
OK here's one. Halfway through, as I mentioned the other night, Grace dies and they need to find a find a new bond-holder for the ship. This is complicated because Grace has no known siblings and usually smothered her newborns.
So the second half is about the power plays between the new captain (who has the ship's backing) and the first mate (who is more experienced, more driven, more devious & has the backing of most of the crew).

Date: 2006-07-09 07:24 am (UTC)I've done "practice" submissions to agents who take email submissions with an earlier novel (codenamed Stupid Novel). Mostly no responses so far.
By practice sub, I mean they were properly done submissions, but I think this novel is significantly better, so I view the other novel subs as a chance to get the kinks out of my system, practice writing query letters and so on. And you never know, someone might actually like it.
