I haven't really got around to searching Trove's digitised newspapers for family names, because the occasional time I have, I haven't found anything interesting. I guess I was just looking for the wrong names.

So I'm sharing a few mention of one great-grandmother (maternal grandmother's grandmother, although not quite the "female line"). Done in chronological order so that puts the more interesting ones towards the end. All from the Examiner.

Before the Warden and J. G. Johnson, J.P. Emily Eeles, licensee of the Nile Hotel, Lymington, was charged with having allowed Robert Boyd (against whom there was a prohibition order) to loiter in her house. Defendant pleaded not guilty. After hearing the evidence of the Superintendent of Police, Constable Copplestone, and the defendant, the bench dismissed the case, as it was not shown that Boyd was there for the purpose of obtaining liquor, but was waiting for his breakfast. 17 January 1895

BALL AT THE NILE.
A BRILLIANT SUCCESS.

An occasional correspondent writes under Thursday's date:—A most successful ball was given by Mrs. Emily Eeles in the Fordon Patriotic Hall on Easter Monday evening. The music was supplied by Mr. G. Ryan, and dancing was kept up until the wee small hours of the morning. (con't 12 April 1901)

The second headline refers to the fourth paragraph. A wild village, that Nile.

Police Court Header

At the Police Court this morning, before Mr. B. Gibson (Warden) and Mr. J. A. Boyes, J.P., Emily Eeles proceeded against Daniel Wood for having on January 5, at the Nile, unlawfully assaulted her by pushing her down. Defendant pleaded not guilty. Complainant stated that the defendant was in her employ on the evening of the above date. She asked him to go and water the garden. He refused at first, but afterwards said that he would if she paid him his wages and let him go. She did not answer him, and went into the bar parlour. Defendant followed her in and pushed her down. She called out, and her daughter Belinda came in and asked defendant how he dared to touch her mother. He replied that he would serve her the same way.

After hearing the evidence of Belinda Eeles, the bench held the charge proved, and defendant, who made no statement, except that he wanted his wages, was fined 10s, with 9s 6d costs. He asked for time, and was allowed one week to find the amount.

Owen Roberts was charged with having assaulted Harold Cassidy by striking him in the face with his hand. Defendant pleaded not guilty, and the bench, after hearing the evidence of several witnesses, dismissed the case, as they considered the defendant only struck the blow accidentally.

Walter Fox pleaded guilty to having disturbed the peace at the Nile on December 27. Special Constable Coghlan stated that on the night of December 27 defendant, who was under the influence of liquor, mounted his horse and rode into the ball-room at the Nile. There were 16 couples on the floor at the time, and about 60 people in the room. Defendant was fined 10s and 7s 6d costs.

John Lyons was charged with having on December 22 in High-street at Evandale, made use of indecent language to Constable Robinson. Defendant pleaded guilty, but said the language was not used to Constable Robinson. A fine of 5s, with 7s 6d, was imposed. 11 January 1906

EVANDALE POLICE COURT

At the Evandale Police Court on Tues day morning, before Messrs. H. Gibson (Warden), and S. Hawley, J.P., Emily Eeles was charged by Sub-Inspector Lyndon with having, on June 5, made use of obscene language in a public place at the Nile. Defendant did not appear, and the case was heard ex parte. After hearing the evidence of Special-Constable Coghlan and John Rigby the bench considered the charge proved, and fined defendant 10s, with 12s costs. 26 June 1907
