I was going to say that until November I'm going to be a bit single-minded, but that's not true. I'll have two subjects on my mind. Double-tracked? Anyway, I'll assume this will be reflected here. You have been warned.
That's why today I was looking through the Tasmanian Almanack, 1825 (that's what it was called). I like Almanacks, they have lots of lists and numbers. This one has a list of significant buildings in Hobart Town. Sixteen of them. I'd ask you to guess what they are, but that's probably a bit hard. (Or is it? There's only one commercial establishment, but other than that, what are the significant buildings in a town of any size?) I also have a street map from the same time with buildings marked on it. I should be able to find all the first and mark them on the map, right? Right...
For now, I am just going to include two lists from the Almanack because I have them and I need to type them up. The first is a list of "Manufactures". (Street name = Hobart Town.)
Not a lot of manufacturing going on, but then the population at the time was something on the size of a large town. However I read that and it brings up all sorts of questions. Why are those things manufactured? Because there was someone who had the skills and saw the need? Or there was a enough of a demand to make it worthwhile (A bit of both, I assume). But hats?
Then there's soap and salt? Is there some process common to their manafucture? I thought salt was made from salt. Why on Bruny Island? Locations of materials? And parchment, made from hides? But what was it used for in enough quantity to make it worth producing?
This is why I shouldn't read almanacs.
Bearing in mind the length of the previous list, the second list is distilleries and breweries:
You get the impression there were a lot of pubs?
