I thought I might make some comments on Australia's latest addition to the
World Heritage List, which is interesting because I've been to some of those place. My previous total for World Heritage Sites visited was 2, or 3 if I can count the Opera House.

There are eleven sites included in the listing, and I've been to four. I won't ask you to guess which four, because you'd most likely be wrong.

  • Kingston and Arthur's Vale Historic Area
  • Old Government House and Domain
  • Hyde Park Barracks
  • Brickendon and Woolmers Estates
  • Darlington Probation Station
  • Old Great North Road
  • Cascades Female Factory
  • Port Arthur Historic Site
  • Coal Mines Historic Site
  • Cockatoo Island Convict Site
  • Fremantle Prison

Kingston on Norfolk Island is a fairly obvious "No". For the purposes of this post, the Second Settlement "Hell in the Pacific" is probably the relevant period (1825-1855). The description on that web site is rather dry, but the treatment of the prisoners led to a number mutinies during that time. The best known one being in 1846, but a quick web search hasn't turned up useful (and searching for '"Norfolk Island" mutiny' is not going to be productive). Hitting the books will mean me having to type stuff in. That can certainly wait.

Fremantle Prison is over in Western Australia, where I also haven't been. And that's the limit of what I know about it too.

Brickendon and Woolmers are old farming properties at Longford, near Launceston so I haven't been to either of them. Seriously. This is a cause of much annoyance to me. They're both privately owned, and I'd assumed only government-owned sites could be listed as National or World Heritage sites. Obviously not. Both properties have retained many outbuildings (see the pages I linked to) from the convict assignment period, which is unusual. I know other properties have some (Clarendon & Somercotes of ones I've visited recently) but not as complete or extensive as the two Archer properties. I'm told, as I haven't been to either. Also of interest, to me, one of my great x2 grandfathers was assigned to William Archer, owner of Brickendon, so I assumed he worked/lived there.

Darlington is obviously a "Yes" because I went there this year. The same with a Port Arthur. The nearby Coal Mines sites is a "No" though.

I have a vague recollection of visiting the Cascades Female Factory. OK it's in Hobart, so I've been a few times. Notes a lack of LJ posts. Have to use link from my out of date website instead.

Old Government House in Sydney, Cockatoo Island in Sydney Harbour and the Great North Road, partly in Sydney, are all "No".

ButHyde Park Barracks, also in Sydney, is my fourth "Yes". It was originally the male prisoner barracks, but had other uses in later years, including an immigration depot for single women, which makes up a significant part of the exhibition space. At least it did in 2000. (While everyone was off watching sporting stuff, we went to the Barracks, the public records office and Elizabeth Farm. All nice & quiet :)
