It is interesting to think about why our brains retain and replay bits of songs. Except when th leads to thinking about how music developed in first place. I'll leave those thoughts to anthropologists. I can't help wondering on if there is-was a purpose to this replaying of short bits of music: territorial? group recognition? a need to find patterns in everything. And if it wasn't music would it be something else?

It maybe suggests we evolved from birds?

Seriously, it might be something tied in with the origin of language. The ability to rehear patterns of sound which might be reasonably complicated, and to replicate such sounds, would presumably be crucial to the task of tying meaning to particular vocal noises.

Or maybe not...

Sounds reasonable to me :)

I should go have a poke around on the web, and see what I can dig up.
