Road trip, with pictures

Saturday morning we headed south, at a reasonable hour (just before 9 am). The weather forecast for Hobart keep promising fine and 22oC (72F). We kept checking. Because as we drove south, the weather was promising to be bloody cold with rain.

File photo -- the sky was not like that
We went down the back road, through Nile and onto the dirt road that eventually joins the highway.

See: grey
Seems they're growing poppies down here too.

That is also grey sky, the camera is being naughty
We stopped at Oatlands, for a toilet and shop break. It was colder than when we'd left home, and trying to rain too :(

That's better
The weather had not improved by the time we reached Hobart. Well, maybe slightly. When I buttoned up by cardigan, I wasn't cold.

I am sure there is a good reason for that.

This year I remember to get a photo of the carousel's story. (I hope that's readable.)

Other than the carousel, there were none of the stalls, sideshows and street entertainers that usually create the street festival atmosphere along the waterfront :( Too late in the week I'd guess. Most of the Sydney to Hobart & Melbourne to Hobart yachts had left too.

For lunch I had a wallaby burger

eaten outside, of course, with a view over the harbour. *sigh*

This is apparently a "huon atlantic salmon and salsa verde" (with a chocolate-coated strawberry on the side). It was a flat bread thing with cheese and fish on it, and very nice.

That sky is turning blue

I don't know what these were about.

Obviously it's sunnye now
A giant flower devil. Really.

The streets outside the Taste side weren't completely devoid of entertainment though. On the lawn at the front of Parliament House, in amongst this celebration of all things Tasmanian, was an African Cultural Festival.

Maybe an overly ambitious name, but there was music and a big crowd who were so obviously enjoying themselves, and was much fun.

And also, it being Saturday, Salamanca Market was on. Yah.

After a day of too much food, too much standing about, too much walking and too much sun (but all good) (except the sun), we headed home.

With a quick stop at Jericho

so I could take a photo of the remains of the probation station, although the sun was a bit too low by then.

And another stop at Ross for tea. I had shepherd's pie, which was nice enough but nothing exciting for the price.
