I think in this case the helpdesk people they were hinting at the answer I needed without actually coming out and saying it. Maybe they can only click on pre-selected form replies? It really is a game.
(I'd inadvertently signed up for something with two email addresses, and had deleted the first one. I kept logging in with the second address, and couldn't get past the 'complete sign up' page because it keep tellimg me I was already signed up. After a round of increasing silly emails with a different person each time, sent to address2 but referring to address1, I tried logging in using that - aha!)
