I found this postcard today.

"Place du Sud. Le Jeu de Balle" which the web-translators claim is "South Place. The game of ball." But which game of ball??

I linked it to a bigger version (as good as I could get). Interesting in other ways too like the line of spectators, double in places, right around and even on that inside bit; or the person watching from the horse & cart on the right; or the rotunda thing on the left that appears to covering part of the road

EDIT: Jeu de Balle seems likely. Oh, that's what it says on the post card :)

Jeu de paume ou jeu de balle, with photos.

Think it developed too late & I can't see any bases or such. Think that rules out rounders too.

To me, it looks like the player in the middle at the back is about to hit something (the dark blop at his feet) towards the front "channel" where there are 4 players waiting to catch it (two crouching, two leaning over with gloves). One of those near-two could be about to throw something though. Or the front guy could be a referee, which would explain the dark trousters when everyone else is wearing white.

I'm looking into stoolball.

Doesn't that have a regular shaped field?
