That last bit was tricky.
I was into the last 2000 words, when I was thrown the opportunity for a "the story was not what it seemed" twist. I was writing the trial of the antagonist, a fairly straight forward, if interesting, event. He took the main, actually only, piece of evidence against him and turned it around, creating a slightly different version of reality, but one, if true, that would change the whole perception of events through the novel.
Alternatively, it could be the start of an interesting sequel.
