There was a anti-pulp mill rally today, up at Low Head. This at the mouth of the Tamar, just north of George Town, in the vicinity of Long Reach, the site of the mill. I thought this was near Bell Bay, the industrial area just south of George Town, but it's further south, near the turn off to the Batman Bridge.
I'll put photos of the area in the next post.
It's about a 40 minute drive from Launceston. Then we had a 30 min walk from where we had to park to the site of the rally. When we got there, Bob Brown was speaking. He was the last speaker, other than one of the organisers.

From what he was saying though, it was more of a rousing of the troops than the 'why we don't want this' gathering that previous rallies had been. A lot of criticism of (Federal Environment Minister) Malcolm Turnbull & (Federal Opposition Spokesman for the Environment) Peter Garrett, who had been invited but had prior commitments. Some comments on whether the ANZ would agree to the funding.
Somewhere between two & six thousand turned up. ABC News report had two, but there were still many people arriving when we got there, towards the end. Regardless, a very good turn out considering how far out of the city it was (a long way in island terms).

Behind the low hill at the back is East Beach

There's the lighthouse.

Once the speakers had finished, everyone headed for the beach.

Here, they put out a large banner for the helicopter.

Leaving the beach afterwards

Here they come: Quick! Run!

Then we walked back to the car and wenthome up to the lighthouse.
