Been talking with [livejournal.com profile] buffysquirrel about maps, 3D & otherwise, of fictional buldings, towns & worlds.

I use Sierra Home Architect to make up plans of any important buildings, which is good because it helps me visualise events and check for mistakes (no, that room can't be overlooking the river). It also lets me do things like this:

So that took an hour. To produce that picture, not counting the hours to do the plan, put in the furniture, do the decor. An hour during which computer is tied up and can't do anything else. And then another half an hour or so fiddling in graphics program to get rid of the glitches. There are always glitches. Missing windows & doors or blobs of colours in odd places. Gah.

Not what I want to do though, is streets. This is one from a few years ago:

Fairly basic & there are still some glitches & the program isn't going to handle anything more than that.

Something that makes street scenes like a computer game's, that would be good.

How about one of the construction sets in games like Morrowind or Oblivion? My kids use them to build houses & caves, and you can drop them into the game at any time.

Ah. I did come across a website that was using Oblivion to model real buildings, but the system requirement were a bit much.

But if Marrowind works the same, that might do the job. Cool.

Very similar, and a lot lower system requirements. It's a cheapie budget title these days, too.

I'll grab a copy. Is this works out, I'll owe you a drink.

If you want any screenshots, let me know. One problem I can see is that the architecture might be a bit fantasy-ish.

However, interiors are good and there's a ton of furniture.

That does look useful. I can see less writing being done once this arrives.
