Tomorrow, March 8, is International Women's Day.

If you're not sure what that is, from the United Nations website:

"When women on all continents, often divided by national boundaries and by ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic and political differences, come together to celebrate their Day, they can look back to a tradition that represents at least nine decades of struggle for equality, justice, peace and development.

"International Women's Day is the story of ordinary women as makers of history; it is rooted in the centuries-old struggle of women to participate in society on an equal footing with men. In ancient Greece, Lysistrata initiated a sexual strike against men in order to end war; during the French Revolution, Parisian women calling for "liberty, equality, fraternity" marched on Versailles to demand women's suffrage.

The idea of an International Women's Day first arose at the turn of the century, which in the industrialized world was a period of expansion and turbulence, booming population growth and radical ideologies."

There is an IWD website with international events listed. The Australian site has some interesting stuff to read too, once you get past the colour scheme.

The Neighbourhood House (where I work) is teaming up with the nearby Health Centre. There'll be a morning tea, followed by workshops, oh, I'll pinch the description from the Women Tas calendar.

"A showcase and a celebration of women's contributions at both the local and international levels of life. The expo will feature visual art displays, workshops and performances and will focus on the many positive holistic contributions that women have made to local and global health and wellbeing. The celebrations will commence at 10am with the Ravenswood Centre Morning Tea.Entry to the events of the day will be by donation and any proceeds raised will go toward providing safe drinking water and live-stock for women living in third world environments." & "Morning Tea followed by workshops on Belly Dancing, Creative Writing, Drumming. Lunch and entertainment followed by workshops on: Box Making, Laughter Therapy etc"

I'm supposed to be taking lots of photos "to be made into a slide show". Not sure what the last bit involves, but any with "taking lots of photos" suits me. Also got some photos to take for the "visual art displays".

I'm also told we're supposed to wear purple.
