My spearmint is flowering.

We all know what spearmint is, it's the common mint that you see everywhere, esp. where you don't want it. Mine is growing in a pot on the middle shelf of three, so it's sent up some really tall stalks with pretty blue flowers on it. Very pretty, and quite big for a herb that is grown for its leaves. I would have expected it have to the usually tiny pale purple/white flowers that the culinary herbs usually have.

Hmm.

It does.

Tiny purplish flowers, almost tube shaped, long stamens (the bit that sticks out), bunched along stem.

Compared to

Bigger, bright blue & white flowers, with large fused petal on one side & tiny on the other, obscured stamen & evenly spaced along stem.

Not spearmint. So what is it? :\

There's definitely a spearminty tang to the leaves, if a bit off. The upper leaves are quite long & narrow, but that could be a side effect of the situation it's growing in (leaf & plant form are affected by environment, flowers for the most part aren't, that's why it's best to use flowers for identification).

An ornamental variety? Bah. Now I'll have to buy a name one to make sure I have what I want.
