Top worm needs to stay ahead or equal with bottom worm.
There's a problem with this plotline, in that it feels like the character is just marking time. Because he is.
He gets a new job, he goes to new place of employment, he hangs around and eventually gets into trouble, then runs away. Slow. Considering pulling it all out and putting it as one lump in the middle of the book. It does provide a 'break' in the other stuff (is this good though?) and a better sense of how much time has passed.
