Tullah, the other bit

So this is the other bit of Tullah, established in the 1970s to provide accommodation for the Hydro-Electric Commission's workers during construction of their power scheme.

You get to it by driving through the older part of Tullah and then on a bit more. Older part and background in previous post so I'm not going to repeat it. This is mostly just pictures.

The first thing you see on entering is the shopping centre. The big red building is the community hall.

Online Access Centre, then a salon that is now empty, then a real estate company.

At the other end is a shop that is newsagent, grocery shop, cafe, post office and everything else. The grocery what is a small room selling food and household goods.

Logo on grocery room window suggests the post office was probably separate when first established.

I could find any older photos of Tullah, other than the school, but inside the shop there was a historical display. I took some photos in there so that's all I have.

This must have been a proposed layout because it's slightly different. One less street on the left, one more on the right. Some buildings like church & fire station aren't as marked. But it show the village in relation to the highway, the lake (created by damming the river) and the older part of the town (top right). All bottom, just left of centre is where the cemetery is.
Note the street across the top that connects to the highway. That's Farrell St. (If you're wondering, the black bits along there are labelled as "Single Mens Quarters" (centre) and "Staff Quarters" (left corner), with "Church" and "Amenities" below.)

That's Farrell St, looking back towards the highway. On the right are the shopping centre and fire station. On the left, in the trees, you can just see a white car parked there, is the Hydro's west coast office and a big open space.

Hydro's west coast office

Behind that is this road, which I wondered where it led to. Having looked at maps since, I guess it went into the single men's quarters (which are no longer there).

Fire station

Opposite is the ambulance station.

Along from that, some houses.

That top left corner is now Tullah Lakeside Lodge.

Another image from the display in the shop. I was really hoping to find this online but no luck. Now Farrell St is at the bottom. Maybe you can pick out some of the other things along there. The long road to the left is the highway. The street down the middle is Central Avenue, and that's where the next lot of photos are taken from.

First the park behind the shopping centre.

There are a lot of plovers about here. Possibly it was their annual gathering.

Also the grass underfoot is not so much grass as a springy moss.

Tennis courts adjoining the park.

Two major features dominate the landscape around here. The mountains being one.

This looks like it used to be a church and my road map has it marked as "Uniting" so I guess it is, or was, a church.

Houses along a side street.

Some of these places have well-established gardens. An odd contrast against the temporary-looking nature of the houses.

Near the southern end, looking back. Not a lot beyond this point, building-wise.

South a bit more, and you find the track to the cemetery.

And the other major feature, Lake Rosebery.
