But, ultimately, you're right, it's not fair. There are far more people who want to be writers (and actors, and singers, and sportsmen, and any other entertainers) than can be.
Professional Xs, sure. But there are amateur theatre companies, sports clubs, venues for amateur artists. And short stories writers even ;)

The technology is obviously there to make amateur book publishing viable, but, as you said, it can damage credibility. So it's counterproductive. I think there needs to be a change in attitude to make it work.
It's just an idea I put out on the off chance it might spread.
