It started with a dare. I knew dares were trouble--after all that's what got me lagged and dumped on this barren rock they call a prison--but I say no harm in following the strange boy, and there was a glass marble at stake. I also so no harm in befriending the lovely boy. And Jimmy paid me back by rescuing me from the dark of the sea.
I didn't know then that he was a selkie, trapped on land after hunters stole his coat. To rescue me, he put thoughts into my head about how to swim but those thoughts stayed with me. I started wandering when I should have been in school, and wool-gathering when I should have been learning my trade. I had a dream, a desire that burned at me, to become a respectable man, a tradesman, a shoemaker, someone others looked up to. But now my new friendship was destroying that dream.
Then Jimmy saved my life once more, by protecting me from a bully-boy, but ion doing so, took the boys' life. They sent him away to town, to be tried as a murderer, but he jumped form the ship and came back to me, his only friend. With my friend Jack, who I trust more than anyone, we found him a place in the bush to sleep, and each night we sneak out to share with him a portion of our meal. It is not enough, the iron chains They put on him weakened him, and he has been too long away from the sea. He is fading before my eyes, but I don't know how to get him help. If we tell the wrong person and They catch us, we will all hang together. I think maybe I should leave him and go back to rebuilding my life, but does a respectable man abandon a friend who saved his life, twice? I think I cannot do this by myself.
That is what I get when I ask my MC's to summarise their stories. Bah.
