Years ago I had the start of a short, and I sent it to a friend so she could write the next bit. After she sent it back, I read the new bit and thought "This is good. I wish I could write like this." Then I looked back at my original to see how much had been added. And both versions were the same.
Every damn word that I'd been admiring was mine.
