Home still
Nov. 27th, 2005 06:51 pmIt occurred to me last week before I left that this trip to lovely Melbourne might be different to previous ones.
See, Melbourne is the city you go to on your way to the rest of the world or because what you are doing happens to be there.
There's a memory from memory years ago of a visit to Melbourne, wandering through an arcade and thinking this could be a interesting city to live in.
Years ago. Before it became the city to kill time in while waiting to catch the overnight express bus to Adelaide or Sydney. The place to wander around during the quiet time at a convention or when you had to check email.
There's what? A zoo, the botanical gardens, a few museums. Been there, done that. Boring. Noisy. Busy. Dull city. Rationally, it has appeal. Lots of different and bigger shops. Good public transport in the city. Inner suburbs full of tree-lined streets with cafes on the every corner. But emotionally? Bah.
So what happens when you go there for an engagement dinner, and arrive three days early. You have the best part of three days to see the city, to actually get around and see some of it.
Well, you get around and *see* some of it. And you know, it's not a bad city to visit at all.
