Sep. 27th, 2004 05:37 pmWoman at the post office probably thinks I'm a bit odd, doing a COD ($8.90) on a 'letter' that I wanted $4.25 for. Swap card & stamps actually, that I'd sold on Ebay & the buyer wanted it COD and didn't mind paying the extra, so she got COD.
I had to go and pick up a parcel of my own. A pack of books from the UK. Books cost me under 3 pounds, postage was 6. :| And that was seamail. Only took 70 days.
_Highland Fairy Legends: collected from oral tradition by Rev James MacDougall_, originally printed in 1910, this is is a 1978 reprint.
_The Biography of a Victorian VIllage: Richard Cobbold's account of Wortham, Suffolk 1860_ It's a collection of notes found in the Suffolk County archives, about the buildings of Wortham & the people who lived in them.

Here lives Old Ned Flatman. Men often speak of other men as if the greatest part of Charity was to wink at their faults. But if people wink at mine in preference to telling me of them they exercise no charity whatsoever. A fashionable lie is downright insincerity.
"Now Ned Flatman was a _drunkard_ to the day of this death! - never attended any place of public worship and never entered a Church till he was carried into it."
(Out of curiousity, looked up both book on abebooks. The lowest price for the second is US$9.30 & for the first, US$25. I'm not complaining)
The third one is Shire album. The history office at the museum has a large set of these thin books. They're wonderful for putting all sorts of odd & everyday objects into their proper (social) context & getting an overview on a subject. I'd love to have a similar set but buying them is tricky. Actually, buying them is easy. There's plenty of them on Ebay for 99 p or US$1.50 but overseas postage on even little books is the killer. Unless I happen to find a seller with a bunch of low priced books that I want. This one is 'Old Toys'. Maybe I should just keep an eye out for local sellers :\
