I knew the 'things happen in 3s' thing was wrong!
The stereo has decided it doesn't need to put out noise all the time :\ and I have no idea why or how to fix it.
What will go wrong next...

Check your ground (earth?) strap! If you don't have one, get one.
If you get lucky it's just static buildup and once properly grounded it will start working again.

Hmmm. What IS a ground strap and does it have anything to do with the knob on the back labelled GND?
