$400 I think. The one Nicquel bought was a "last year's model" so it was makred down $100 and I think it had something extra thrown in, like a free battery recharager. The ones I like now are $500 and upwards.

I think the most important thing is to have some idea what you mainly want to do with it. In that price range, you'll have to trade off something for something. I wanted a good zoom, for example, for taking photos of birds & things a long way off. You might be more concerned with the speed (digital cameras often have a noticable delay between pressing button & shutter operating, it can be frustrating) or resolution (esp. if you want to print them in larger sizes), or camera size (having a camera that fits in the pocket of my jeans is very handy).

Seen a lot of waterproof digital cameras around lately. I'd certainly look at getting a weatherproof one next time.
