The reunion I went to the other day was for the descendents of mother's paternal grandparents, John & Ellen/Helena/Nellie Hoggett (nee McCarthy). They married in 1892 and had a dozen children, all now dead. Ellen's family background is fairly well known, at least back 2-3 generations. John's family though, is a little murky.

I have the birth certificate (read, printout taken from the Births, Deaths & Marriages register). The details are as such:

1865 Births in the District of Morven

Born: 1 September 1864
Name: John Sex: M
Father: John Hoggett, Laborer
Mother: Mary Hogett Hoggett formerly Poole
Informant: W. H. Walton, Longford

There's a couple of notable points about this entry. Morven is the town now known as Evandale, however the 'district' covers quite a wide area, including the townships of Breadalbane, Nile & Deddington and sometimes Perth. We need a map, don't we? Hopefully it'll load. Evandale is just south, well south east, of Launceston in the flat/white area. I've got notes from various family sources that say John was born at Ben Lomond or Kingston (property at the base of Ben Lomond) which is the big mountain (brown patch) off to the right a bit.

Compare the date of birth to when the birth was officially registered. Over four & a half months. Usually the registration is done within a month of the birth.

Finally, and I only noticed this the other day, the informant is from Longford (bigger town west of Evandale) which has had a separate registration dist for nearly 20 years by now. The next entry in the birth register is for a boy, Mark, born on the 6 January; Father: not known, farmer; Mother: Emma Green, unmarried, Informant W H Walton, Longford, Registered 20 January.

I also have a similar entry for his younger brother, James.

1867 Births in the district of Morven

Born: 16 May
Name: Sex: M
Father: John Hoggett, Laborer
Mother: Mary Ann Hoggett formerly Townsend
Informant: John Hoggett, Breadalbane

Note mum's name is a bit different, but that's not really a problem. She is pretty well accounted for. She started off married to a guy by the name of Wm Townsend (so she had two "former names"), they had a handful of kids, then he disappeared, and she's moved in with John here, a few years later she's found herself a different John, with whom she has a daughter or two, and family stories say there's a fourth husband, possibly Nelson.

The problem today is with the father. See, the two birth entries above and a line in a Post Office Directory for 1860s "John Hoggett, Farmer, Breadalbane" are all that is known for certain about JH of the Evandale district.

And that's where it becomes interesting.
